Aha! Adventure - Canoe Course and Refresher, AB

Location: Glenmore and Bow River

Dates:   May 23:  Day 1- 6pm-9pm Intro to Flatwater on the Glenmore Reservoir

               May 24:  Day 2- 6pm- 9pm Intro to River at the Bowness Eddies

               May 25:  Day 3- 9am- 4pm- Intro to whitewater- Ghost Dam to Cochrane

Cost: $300 plus gst

Refresh your canoe skills with Steven and Ang to get ready for your canoe adventures this summer! We will start off on the flatwater and take you to the river and intro whitewater in one comprehensive course.  You will learn and practice eddy turns and forward ferries to help you feel in control of your canoe so that you can put it where you want in the river.

Prerequisites: Even if you have some canoe experience, it is good to get a refresher on your canoe strokes and spend time on the water to refresh your skills and start from the beginning. If you would like any exceptions, give me a call or email at ang@yfbc.ca and I can see where you can jump in.

Cancellation Policy:  If you need to cancel or withdraw, you can have a refund minus a $25 admin fee 2 weeks before the start date.  No refund within 2 weeks of the start date.

Itinerary:

May 23: 6-9pm- Flatwater skills/refresher at the Glenmore Reservoir.  Meet at the docks at the Heritage Park Entrance.  Map: https://goo.gl/maps/HBnHb1YSEiZF6G9m8

May 24: 6-9pm- Intro to river/refresher at the Bowness Eddies.  Meet in the farthest west parking lot at Bowness Park. (look for the canoes!)  Map: https://goo.gl/maps/dePqo8ZfFWpfjMio6

May 25: 9am- 4pm:  Meet at the bridge in Cochrane where we can leave vehicles and carpool up to the put in.

We will focus on refreshing our canoe skills and doing eddy turns and ferries as we travel down river from Ghost Dam to Cochrane.

 

Cost Includes:

  • canoe gear (canoes, paddles, pfd's, helmets)

  • Safety equipment (throwbags, first aid kit, emergency communication)

  • Instructors

  • Transportation of canoes

 

You need to provide:

  • Lunch, snacks, water/thermos of hot liquids

  • Wetsuit or drysuit – the water is cold in June and with learning you have a good chance of swimming during the course!

  • Shell jacket/paddling jacket

  • Neoprene booties or neoprene socks with sport sandals/running shoes

  • Neoprene gloves

  • Lots of layers and extra warm clothes

 

Transportation Details:

You will need to meet the instructors at the designated location and we will work together to set up the shuttles.

 

Medical Form and Waiver:

In order to participate in this course, you are required to sign an Adult Waiver or Youth Informed Consent. You will also need to fill out the online medical form.
